The spacious yet compact VW Caddy is very popular with families, tradespeople and SMEs alike. It is now available in two further versions: as a TGI with the highly efficient CNG drive and as an elegant special model known as “Dark Label”. In this way, VW Commercial Vehicles is expanding its extensive portfolio of petrol and diesel engines with the addition of fascinating alternatives to the Caddy range and also for the Caddy Maxi, which is 35 centimetres longer.
The TGI versions are powered by a 1.5-litre turbo engine with 131 hp. Even in the larger Maxi version, this ensures good driving performance with low energy consumption: after all, the Caddy Maxi TGI is the only vehicle in the series to have received the A+ energy label in Germany. When run on biogas, the Caddy TGI has a significantly lower level of emissions than conventional combustion engines, even enabling CO2-neutral mobility. In addition, running costs are significantly lower than with petrol or diesel variants.

21.1 kg of CNG/biogas fit into the five steel tanks mounted in the underbody of the vehicle. Since these are installed underneath, the large load compartment of the Caddy Maxi remains fully available. As a reserve, the CNG caddy still has an 8.25-litre petrol tank on board, so the VW can automatically switch to petrol when the gas tanks are empty: even if you happen not to be able to get to a CNG pump, you have plenty of back-up on board to get to your destination easily. With a consumption of 4.3 kg/100 km of CNG or biogas, gas-fired power alone means a range of more than 400 kilometres.
The new Caddy TGI is only available in the long wheelbase version of the variants Cargo, Kombi, Caddy Life and Style. Prices in Germany start at EUR 27,430 (net/excl. VAT). Unfortunately, the practical CNG vehicle is not available for purchase in Switzerland. Swiss importer Amag cites insufficient demand to justify its decision not to introduce this TGI variant of the Caddy – even though it’s an exciting option for environmentally and budget-conscious families as well as for tradespeople and SMEs who want to focus on greater sustainability.

The situation is different in Germany, where the CNG version is currently also available as an attractive special “Dark Label” model. Among other things, this features black roof rails, gloss-turned 17-inch Columbo alloy wheels in black and matching foil lettering. The exterior mirror housings are also finished in black, while the door handles are finished in body colour and the sliding door rail likewise sports a black finish. A panoramic sunroof, LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights and the Keyless Start system are also included. (jas, 21 July 2022)
