Heading for much greater sustainability

Demand for a sustainable supply chain is increasing. For this reason, the Italian Torello Group deliberately opted for LNG-powered trucks for its latest fleet renewal.

Iveco recently got to supply 40 new S-Ways to the Torello Group in Montoro, Italy. For decades, the family-owned company has offered transport solutions tailored to the relevant sector, as well as road and intermodal transport to cater for all types of load. The Italian company attaches particular importance to a functional fleet with the right vehicle to suit every delivery task – as demonstrated in its fleet renewal and choice of drive: out of its 40 most recently acquired vehicles, half of the Iveco S-Ways run on LNG. Running on liquefied biogas, the LNG trucks offer an enormous range of almost 1,600 kilometres and are still virtually carbon-neutral.

The diesel and LNG vehicles are also fitted with the most advanced fuel-saving systems such as predictive GPS, intelligent assistants and smart exhaust gas recirculation. Meanwhile, aerodynamically optimised cabin design enables a further reduction in fuel consumption of up to four per cent. “It’s exciting to start the new year with a delivery,” reveals Antonio Torello, partner and CTO of the company of the same name, at the vehicle handover – particularly underlining the added sustainability of the 20 new LNG-powered trucks.

“For us, these new additions mean an expansion and diversification of the fleet so as to meet the demands of the market,” adds Torello. “After all, customers are aware of the increasing ecological, social and economic dynamic. These 40 new vehicles are another building block in the integrated logistics that the Torello Group offers its customers.”

The S-Ways are all equipped with adaptive cruise control, Driving Style Evaluation (DSE) and Driver Attention Support (DAS). These help drivers achieve much greater efficiency and economy. Steering movements are recorded, too: if they indicate that the driver’s concentration may drop, the vehicle gives the drive a fatigue warning. The 40 Ivecos also feature “Eco-Fleet,” “Eco-Roll” and “Eco-Switch,” automatic air conditioning and integrated stationary cooling. In addition, the new positioning of the wide-angle lenses of the outdoor cameras makes for easier manoeuvring.

The 20 S-Ways with LNG drive each have two 540-litre tanks, enabling a range of up to 1,600 kilometres before having to refuel. What is more, the LNG Ivecos have the same payload as a diesel vehicle, but they emit up to 15% less CO2, even with LNG. This means that the LNG trucks are perfectly able to compete with their diesel counterparts, and with over 653 LNG filling stations, there is a sufficient network for long-distance transport. The constantly increasing availability of bio-LNG at filling stations is enabling ever more sustainable freight transport.

“The Torello Group is a company that has grown historically and has a key role to play in our sector,” said Fabrizio Buffa, head of the Iveco market for medium and heavy vehicles in Italy. “With the addition of the 40 new Iveco S-Ways to the fleet, half of which are fitted with LNG drive, the company is clearly confirming its commitment to efficient and sustainable transport.” (pd/jas, 07 February 2023)
