Climate-friendly removal helper

Peyer Bern, specialist for removals, transports and storage, organises more than 2200 private and 1100 business removals per year. And this has even been climate-neutral since 2020! The family-owned company, founded in 1956, relied on a photovoltaic system, biodiesel and, above all, a plethora of CNG vehicles at a very early stage.

If you have any questions about moving, transport or storage, Peyer Bern is the company to contact in the region of the Swiss capital. “We never want to stand still, but are constantly developing to meet all our customers’ needs at the highest level,” reveals CEO Marc Peyer. To this end, his team adheres to clearly defined processes and undergoes regular audits to secure various quality certificates. “When it comes to our vehicle fleet, we also rely on the latest and, above all, the most climate-friendly technology possible,” Marc Peyer adds.

A photovoltaic system with 300,000 kWh has already been on the roofs of the warehouses since October 2013. “Solution-oriented thinking and environmentally conscious action are very important to us,” explains Marc Peyer. This is why his company managed to obtain the “climate-neutral company” label from the ‹myClimate› foundation three years ago. The entire vehicle fleet has been CO2-neutral since 2011. “With ‹myClimate› as a partner, we are also examining potential savings and have also developed a strategy for sustainable climate protection,” adds Peyer. Logically, this also has an impact on vehicle procurement and their drive technologies.

This is why, for example, the new removal helper drives with a CNG drive and fills up with biogas at the company’s own filling station in order to be almost CO2-neutral on the road: a manoeuvrable Piaggio Porter NP6. The vehicle has been loaded up and, thanks to double tyres on the rear axle, is now approved for a weight of up to 2.8 tonnes. Exactly what it took for the Italian all-rounder with its 1.5-litre four-cylinder CNG hybrid (106 hp, 118 Nm) to be additionally equipped with a practical reins lift. Apart from its narrow width of 1.80 metres, the Italian one-off thus scores points above all in terms of low environmental impact.

“If we had to place a special truck with lift in a courtyard or by a house entrance and then run the diesel engine throughout the day to send the Zügellift up with the material,” explains Christian Zimmermann, “this was not always met with approval.” This is now different thanks to the Piaggio’s biogas drive: the porter in the chic Peyer green and the strikingly familiar yellow lettering not only travels to the site almost CO2-neutral, its lift can also be operated in a more climate-friendly way thanks to biogas. The lift, which lifts around 250 kilos per load on a platform at a speed of one metre per second, can also be operated with electricity – so that it can bring removal goods up to a height of 24 metres without any local emissions if required, but in both cases almost CO2-neutral.

Another advantage is that the one-off with the lift body from Wolf Produkte AG in Alpnach Dorf OW is ready for use within a very short time. Driver Lucien Benninger switches on the power take-off and gets out. “If it whirs, it’s okay,” he says with a knowing grin, pushes the lever up and extends the supports so that the removal worker stands safely and, above all, absolutely horizontally. One last check of the spirit level on the lift, and then we can actually get started. Another practical feature: the body can be used as a box or also as a platform and thus offers the necessary flexibility, no matter what needs to be lifted. A real asset for the Bernese removal specialist.

“We had to fight for it, though, because it was not at all easy to mount the lift body on the Piaggio,” explains company boss Marc Peyer. “Besides, we had to wait quite a long time for parts because of the pandemic, so the conversion dragged on and took almost two years. Yet we use such lifts very often for our moving operations.” Therefore, the company boss is particularly pleased that the Piaggio Porter with CNG drive now finally complements the fleet, which is also otherwise designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with various biodiesel, electric and also biogas vehicles.
